Ray Allen awoke as a raconteur after doggedly pursuing fluky situations with outlandish characters in lieu of better judgment, and then making his friends listen as he recounted the (at times) unbelievable details. As the creator of “Memoir Spool,” a monthly storytelling event, Ray believes that stories thrive best when confessed candidly to an intimate audience.

When not spinning yarns (or doing whatever imprudent thing needs to be done to get the yarn on the damn spool in the first place), Ray can be found moonlighting as the Government Relations and Legal Affairs Manager for the Burning Man Project.

Intimidated by the wild and talented storytellers you see onstage at Bawdy? Don’t be. These guys are good, but so are you. I’m always looking for new storytellers, and I usually announce the theme at least a month in advance of the event.

Check back regularly for the upcoming event’s theme, and enjoy the delicious torture that is having a tale to tell, and the thrill of sharing it with a roomful of kindred souls.

Here’s how you tell a story onstage at Bawdy:

Keep your story under ten minutes in length
It’s easy to get caught up in the punch line, and then you’re stuck with “…and so yeah, that happened”. Think “beginning, middle and end’.
If you’re new to this, rehearse it a time or two in front of at least one other person
No reading! But crib notes are OK.
If you name names in your story, change ‘em. The pervy community is fairly small, after all
